In 1997, Paul Smith of Calconix, a supplier based in Philadelphia, and Doug Bruce of Pennsylvania Promotions, a local distributor, decided to work together to create a private catalog that could benefit both suppliers and distributors. The catalog, which featured a selection of products from best-in-class suppliers, was available to only a handful of distributors and to only one distributor per marketplace.
While the exclusive catalog served as the keystone of the group, it represented something much bigger than a unique collection of solutions for sale. The idea was to create a consortium of distributors and suppliers committed to working and growing together by sharing ideas, offering special pricing, problem-solving, and building relationships based on trust. From the outset, suppliers were equal group members—a novel concept that continues to set Premier Group apart today.
Technology has advanced, and the group and our members have embraced digital tools for selling in addition to the catalog. But the desire to provide mutually beneficial relationships for both distributors and suppliers remains as strong as ever. With Paul Smith still involved in the organization as Chairman Emeritus, Premier Group continues to deliver on its promise as a supportive, collaborative environment for growth that benefits all members equally.
